A study for a new verandah to a hotel located within the former “Evans Stores” warehouse in Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct. The verandah is attached to the rear of the building to address Nurses Lane, a compressed public space formed by the backs of buildings fronting Harrington and George Streets. The verandah extends the capacity of the hotel restaurant and provides access from and activates the under-utilised public space of Nurses Walk. The structure spans the width of the building revealing a sandstone arch in the warehouse footings. It is curved as a counterpoint to the mass of the warehouse block and forms a new public gathering space on Nurses Walk.
