A rectangular brick volume is added to the rear of an existing semi-detached house in a beachside suburb of Sydney. A pair of timber boxes are suspended within the space to provide independent rooms for a study and a bedroom with a third timber box forming a platform for the kitchen and dining area. Steel stairs connect the various programs and living areas as they step down the site. A series of windows are located in the mortar-wash brick envelope to allow views from each of the internal levels and spaces. Galvanised steel sun shades protect the interior and direct views towards the coast beyond.
