The masterplan to converts an existing BHP Biliton Technology Centre, located adjacent to the Newcastle Callaghan Campus, into an institute delivering sustainable energy solutions through industry partnership.

The masterplan integrates the existing centre with the university campus through new pedestrian and vehicular access and adds new facilities to create 15,000 sqm of research space across a 3.8 hectare site over 10 years. The facilties will include mineral, chemical and related technical laboratories, workshops, conference facilities, office space and industrial scale pilot plant workshops providing students and researchers with industry relevant experience. A band of new laboratory buildings brings order to NIER and creates a new identity for the Institute from the campus.
